GENERATING IDEAS
RESPONSE TO BRIEF
I have been asked to produce a short dramatised sequence that can be used to promote my television drama. This sequence should be between 10 and 15 minuted long and work best to gain interest with my target audience. This 15 minutes can include one or more scenes from my show.
I will need to consider which scene to use to fit my target audience best to entice them to watch the full show. This could be by using a starting scene to introduce characters and key themes, a dramatic moment from the middle of the show or even a scene from the end of the show when most of the drama is happening.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
EXTRACT 1:
- Opening scene, episode 1
- Characters = Violet, Olivia, George, Alex, Violets parents
- The scene is when the audience learns about the assault, which is a catalyst to all the other events in the show.
Positives:
- Gives the audience an introduction to all the characters
- Doesn't spoil any major drama for the viewers, only what they would have been told in the TV show description.
- Gives the audience a key outline of themes in the show
Negatives:
- Could be triggering to potential viewers who don't know the themes of the show
- The immediate unsettling nature could be off-putting to certain viewers
- May not have enough of the drama to entice viewers to watch the show
EXTRACT 2:
- Ending scene, episode 7
- Characters = Violet, Alex, Violets parents, the police.
- This scene is when the key resolution of the show happens, the audience see Violet and Alex trying to repair after the pain they both feel.
Positives:
- Its a very dramatic scene that will entice viewers
- The audience gets an understanding of Violet and Alex's relationship and gets a hint to events that happened in the show
- It shows key themes of the show without being too triggering to potential viewers
- It ends on an uplifting note
Negatives:
- It contains spoilers for the audience for the ending, one of the most important parts, of the show.
- The audience may become confused if they see this scene and don't have any prior context of events, and the scene will not be as effective.
- It is a very emotional scene, which could be alarming to some viewers if this is the promotion that is being used.
EXTRACT 3:
- Middle scene, episode 4
- Characters = Violet, Sam, George and Alex
- This scene takes place in the middle of the whole show, and reveals a second catalyst that causes Violet to break down.
Positives:
- The audience will get a good hint of what the show is about and wether they like it as it takes place in the middle, the events feel more natural rather than a set up or a resolution.
- The audience can see key themes of the show without being too triggered.
Negatives:
- As it takes place in the middle of the show the characters and storylines are already establishes, so viewers might get confused about what is happening
- It may spoil these events in the show, which are something that keeps the audience interested in the middle.
- The scenes are quite downbeat and emotional which may off put viewers.
EXTRACT 4:
- Opening scene, episode 2
- Characters = Violet, Olivia, Sam
- This scene is an introduction to how the audience will come to know Violet and Olivia and Sam.
Positives:
- It is one of the scenes where the character are happier and the themes are lighter, so it could be good to draw in potential viewers who only feel as if the show is down beat and sad.
- Nothing too dramatic happens, which won't spoil anything for viewers
Negatives:
- Using a more uplifting scene may be falsely drawing in viewers; if they don't know the key mature and emotional scenes of the show, they may be triggered or unhappy when watching the full show.
- It may not contain enough drama to entice viewers in to watch the show
EXTRACT 5:
- Middle scene, episode 6
- Characters = Violet, Olivia, Alex
- In this scene we are introduced to the conflict between Violet and Alex, and the audience sees Violets chaotic nature.
Positives:
- Its a good hint to the key themes in the show.
- The audience can understand the relationship between Violet and Alex more, and maybe understand that the show has more layers to just Violet being assaulted.
- Lots of drama happens here, without necessarily spoiling anything key for the audience
Negatives:
- The audience may be confused if they see this scene without any context or other info
- Audiences may watch this scene and be mislead about the nature of the show, as it doesn't reveal all themes of the show
EXTRACT 6:
- Ending scene, episode 5
- Characters = Violet, Sam, Violets parents
- This scene reveals a key dynamic of the show of Violet and her parents, and shows the main argument they have
Positives:
- It reveals the argumentative nature of Violets parents, which may bring in a lot of teens to watch the show if they can relate
- The scene ends on a positive note between Violet and Sam which may entice viewers to watch
Negatives:
- May mislead viewers if they think that Violets parents have a huge part in the show
- Reveals a key dramatic element between Violet and her parents
DEVELOPING IDEAS
The idea I have chosen to move forward with is idea 2.
This extract contains one of the most dramatical and emotional scenes in the whole show without spoiling too much of the dramatic elects in the show. This could be used to promote the show as I feel young audiences would be drawn to this emotional scene and watch to find out why they are acting this way, therefore gain interest to watch the show. This scene also reveals a lot of dynamics without spoiling the whole show. Audiences would still feel interested when watching the show as they haven't seen any interactions between Violet and Sam or Olivia or George but this scene will hint to all of them. This extract could also use very short snippets or even snap shots to promote it as just setting the emotions on the characters would draw in audiences. I also think this extract would keep audiences interested for the length of 10-15 minutes which is what the client brief states.
