P1 - Response to the Brief

RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF

BBC RESEARCH

The BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation, which is the national broadcaster of the United Kingdom and based in London. Their aim is to educate, inform and entertain their audience. The BBC3 channel was relaunched after seven years in February 2022, it has had increasing popularity with the release of shows like Fleabag, Killing Eve and Normal People.
It did this to combat losing its market share to bigger streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime which are becoming incredibly popular with this younger audience. The audience of this platform is 16-34 year olds, the platform tries to aim to reflect their experiences in a creative way that is captivating to a hard to reach audience. When looking into the BARB Staes for popular TV shows, we can see that not one BBC3 show is in the top 15. This tells us tat BBC3 is still slowly gaining popularity after its relaunch, and is maybe finding it hard to balance competitors. It may also tell
us how to cater to the audience. Most of the shows on the top 15 chart had regular viewing hours at 6 or 7 pm which isn't reasonable to our audience. This audience probably takes advantage of BBC's iplayer more than other audience groups. BBC3 are very popular with their crime dramas and a lot of their shows deal with topics that the other BBC channels may not show because of their older audience who may to be open to certain issue being shown. They make a lot of edgy shows to cater to the younger audience. They run from 7pm to 4am every day to try and target this audience who is up later and may be in education during the day.
A television drama is a show, usually 6-8 episodes, of narrative fiction that is intended to be more serious then funny in tone. An example of this on BBC3 is Happy Valley. Some of the biggest competitors for BBC3 is Netflix, Disney+ and Prime with lots of new original drama content becoming popular amongst this audience with TV shows like Stranger things, Wednesday and Bridgerton being really popular amongst this audience. This are also big competitors because they broadcast internationally, when BBC3 only broadcasts to the UK. The conventions of a drama depend on what sub-genre it all as well. Generally, we can say that the main conventions of a TV drama consist of use of characters that relate to the specific genre to transmit messages quickly, realistic filming editing is common as well.

RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF

The brief I have been give has asked me to create a TV drama for the new launch of BBC3 aimed at 16-21 year olds.  I need to make sure to understand the audience of BBC3 before I make my music video, otherwise I will not be following the brief.  They want me to create a good quality TV show which is catered to the UK audience. This tells me I will need to do more more research in what's popular already on BBC3 (a UK based platform) and not popular shows on Amazon Prime or Netflix to compare to as these are international platforms. I will need to create a concept for the drama series by planning and creating a detailed report-style proposal and create a separate pitch presentation in order to 'sell' my idea to the BBC3 executives. I need to make sure the content fits with BBC's content, ethos and style. I am able to decide the duration and number of episodes within my £800,000 budget for the whole series. Each episode will be released one week apart and after the last episode the show will be available on iplayer. The BBFC rating should not exceed 15 and I must comply with all OFCOM regulations.
