REPRESENTATION
Stuart Hall defined representation as 'the ability to describe or imagine'. This is a key idea in
understanding that representation is a way of portraying certain groups in the media. Representation is really important when trying to portray a message to the viewers, it gives the creator an ability to make the viewer have a certain opinion about a topic just by how it's represented. This could be by choosing what information is put in, the title and even the shot types that make the viewer think a certain thing. Lots of groups in the media are often underrepresented for example people of colour, homosexual people and women. Often underrepresentation can even be seen as just completely ignoring a certain group and idealising those in power for example straight white men are often put on a pedestal in lots of media. Stereotypes are commonly used to put groups in boxes and reduces people down to a few assumptions, but this can be used a lot when trying to represent people in the media. Stuart Hall is very well known for talking about representation and its importance as a means of communication and social interactionMediation = filter that reality goes through on its way to being represented in a media product
Hegemonic = ruling or dominance especially by one social group/state over another
