 MUSIC VIDEOS FROM HISTORY

Madonna - Vogue

The music video was directed by David Fincher in 1990 around Madonna's song toxic. The video fits into concept and performance styles however it doesn't follow a particular or clear narrative. It is shot in black and white and takes stylistic inspiration from the 1920's and 1930's. The music video also works with pastiche, lots of the close up shots mirror stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Judy Garland etc. that were all stars of this era. Lots of famous Hollywood photographers were also referenced in the video. Lots of close up shots are used as well as full shots where we see dancing from Madonna and other people included in the video. Most of the shots are eye level however we do see some shots from higher and lower angles. There is a lot of fast paced shots.

Sia - Chandelier

This music video was made in 2013 and was directed by the artist (Sia) and Daniel Askill and choreographed by Ryan Heffington. The video follows a young girl dancing through an apartment in weird ways and a lot of the movements follow the music and the pace of the lyrics. This follows a performance and concept style of video, there isn't really a story but the link between movement and music keeps the audience captivated. This was quite a modern video even for the time in 2013, it gained lots of attention, having over 2.5 billion streams on YouTube. The video gained the song a lot go popularity and an upcoming famous dancer was used to bring more attention to the video and a wider audience. The camera follows the main dancer on a dolly shot to bring our attention to the dancer. There isn't a lot of past pace shots or complex shot types because the dancer is the main focus of the video. Even though the artist doesn't feature in the video, it still gives the audience a sense of who she is, with the dancer wearing a wig similar to what the artists wears as her trademark. The song is a pop song, so the concept style of this video links in with a lot of other pop songs in the genre but the creativity and originality sets it apart from lots of others in the genre. This video is also very versatile, it doesn't target a specific age group which suits the pop genre and Sia's wide audience.
