AUDIENCE THEORIES
Why do audiences consume media texts?
People consume media as a way of escapism and entertainment. Lots of people want distractions from their everyday life and they can achieve this by immersing themselves in something else. Media can also give lots of people in groups of minority a sense of being seen with platforms that have a lot of representation of perhaps their culture or experiences. It can give people inspiration about themselves and their lives and quite often can be very addictive. Lots of media is also very informational for example the news, many people watch it to just know what's going on in the world and feel involved.
Uses and Gratifications Theory:
Audience needs:
- Personal Identity
= identifying with characters on screen which helps us to understand our own personal identity e.g Netflix teen shows
- Escapism
= Pure entertainment e.g Love Island
- Personal Relationships/Social Interaction
= learning how to communicate by what we see on screen, and also using it to easily relate to other who have also seen it e.g Marvel
- Surveillance
= Gaining insight to how others live, educating/informing e.g the news
